In 860, Askold completed the first documentation of Russia’s campaign against Constantinople, the capital of Byzantine. The siege of Constantinople lasted for a whole week, and according to the words of Photius, “the place was never put on the list,” as for a long time they called the fortress an attack. Emperor Michael III at this time fought with the Arabs in Asia Minor and the disturbances would eventually destroy his home. The war ended peacefully. The Russians’ assault on Tsargorod had a great resonance with the immediate world and, restoring its status and prestige of the empire, the emperor hastened back. The Venetian chronicler Leo the Deacon confirmed that those who had visited the Byzantine capital turned home “in triumph.”

There are several versions of the origin of the name Askold. The most popular version interprets it as ancient Scandinavian Hǫskuldr, Haskuldr or Höskuldr. They are the namesake of the Black Sea tribe of the “royal” Scythians – the Skoloti, who, however, appeared in the 3rd century.
